Better Classroom Management with Class Dojo

If you find yourself struggling with classroom management or looking to refresh your current plan. These are some great tips that will lead you to  better classroom management.

ClassDojo is an online website that allows students to earn points for developing pro-social skills.

First, when I  started using ClassDojo, the newness of the reward system kept my students engaged. However, like any extrinsic reward system, the newness wore off quickly.

Drawing inspiration from my experience as a Google Maps contributor, where level design keeps us engaged by earning badges for accumulating points.

Also,  I wondered how I could translate this idea to ClassDojo.

Next, As part of my  classroom management plan, I introduced a treasure box where students could get prizes.

Instead of using my discretion, I tied the prizes to the number of points they earned through ClassDojo.

Then, I used the following levels:

    • Level 1 (300 points): 1 prize from the treasure box
    • Level 2 (900 points): 2 prizes
    • Level 3 (1300 points): 3 prizes
    • Level 4 (2300 points):4 prizes

Students got to redeem their points once they reach a specific level.

Last, the results were great. My students kept their excitement throughout the year and made every effort not to lose points. This system allowed me to reinforce positive behaviors and discourage negative ones.

While it may not be a foolproof method, it is an important part of an effective classroom management plan.
